Speeding problems in Yeadon

“Speeding is a constant problem in Yeadon and we urgently need to do something to change the way that drivers think. If elected in May, I am proposing to purchase additional speed indicator signs for Yeadon. These devices have been proven to reduce speeding. They will be especially effective in reducing drivers’ speed as they come in to Yeadon, but also in reducing speeding on roads that have a problem with rat running.”

I’ve spent a lot of time talking to people on the doorstep in Yeadon over the last 6 months and speeding and rat-running are the issues that come up again and again.

It’s a good step forward that there is finally a Speed Indicator Device on Cemetery Road, after residents had complained for years and Labour campaigned for this in the 2015 local election. But one SID isn’t likely to be enough to tackle the problems of speeding and rat-running.

I’d like to continue gathering information from residents who have to live with the boy racers, and who know where and what times the problems arise along the other speeding hot spots in Yeadon. We also need to look carefully at measures to reduce the volume and speed of rat-running through residential streets such as the Hawthorns and Windmill Lane.

We need to get together with traffic police, Otley and Yeadon Neighbourhood policing team and PCSOs to pool our community knowledge about the problems. We could form a community action group and apply to the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Safer Communities Fund in the August round of grants, to properly map each of the problem areas in Yeadon and work towards solutions. Road safety is listed as one of the Fund’s priorities.

Possible solutions might be more mobile SIDs, or hand held speed radar devices, or mobile police cameras to catch and fine the boy racers who are a danger to themselves and other road users. Let me know if you think this is a good idea – you can read about the Safer Communities Fund here: www.westyorkshire-pcc.gov.uk/safer-communities-fund.aspx
