Otley Town Council is short one councillor after Savanna Dabill (Lib Dem) stepped down from her post earlier in the year. The democratic process of replacing her has begun although one particular Lib Dem councillor feels that they should have been able to simply co-opt a new councillor for 12 months.

As Labour Party member (and former local leader) John Eveleigh points out, it’s “Strange for a party with the word ‘democrat’ in their title to advocate co-option. Who – in their right mind – would want to be co-opted? They would have absolutely no democratic legitimacy and would operate as a sort of second class councillor!”
